Interoperability
« Back to Glossary Index

Interoperability refers to the ability of different existing or future digital products, tools and systems to communicate with each other. This is done on the basis of common standards. It should be pointed out that the interfaces of these systems, tools and products are fully known. It is important to stress that “interoperability” is different from “compatibility”. To put it simply, the latter can be considered as a vertical notion which means that a given product can function while respecting certain characteristics in a given environment. Interoperability, on the other hand, is a cross-cutting concept that allows various tools to communicate with each other and work together.
